Whether it be chimney caps, basketball poles, or metal railings, no one likes a rusty metal surface; rust can make any object look worn down, old, and just plain ugly.
Here are the 3 steps you need to take in order to revive that surface!
1. Use a wire brush to scrub rust off the metal surface.
It is important to remove as much rust as you can from the metal, otherwise rusting can continue, which will result in peeling.
2. Prime the metal with an all surface enamel oil primer.
Oil-based primers best adhere to metal surfaces, as opposed to latex-based primers, and can seal in any rust remaining on the metal. Our painters like to use Sherwin Williams All Surface Enamel Oil Primer when working on the job site.
3. Paint the metal surface with an all surface enamel oil based paint.
Lastly, paint over the primer using a Sherwin Williams All Surface Enamel Oil Based paint. This can be applied by brushing and rolling or spraying. It is a heavy duty material made to withstand weathering and heavy sunlight. Coming in gallons, you can order this product in a satin or gloss finish.
Bare metal left exposed to the weather can oxidize and rust over years of weathering, which can pose challenges when attempting to repaint properly. It is important to correctly prep these rusting metal surfaces, otherwise peeling paint will result shortly after.
